The film classic from Fritz Lang with new music from Harry Kulzer.
What we offer! We are inviting you to a film evening is it's original form:
the sounds of the projector, the film reel changes and the worrying glances
of the projectionist that the film might break.
The music for this film is composed and played by Harry Kulzer. His composition
is much more than just entertainment, rather, provides the dramatic element
of the evening. Harry Kulzer lives and feels the music and under his hands
gives wings to the film through the hammering, screaming and caressing of
the keyboard.
Together with the Murnau Foundation we are presenting this film classic as
16mm film on the big screen. "Metropolis" displays - as no other film can
- the intense strength of this medium.
We're offering you film in it's classical form - then, whether as mass entertainment,
Art form, or documentary - no other medium had so an impact or authentically
captured 20th century - like movies.
In 2001, UNESCO included "Metropolis" in it's "Memory of the World" documentary.
This is the first film of any kind to be included! In 2007 "Metropolis" experienced
it's 80th anniversary (1927).
For the film visitors, a real sensation: 90 minutes in two acts!
Press Release:
From the Friedberger Allgemeine:
"...the real hit of the evening was not only the film, rather the accompanying
live music ... Sensitive - and when necessary deeply stirring and aggressive
- but, always exactly correct for the film scene, Kulzer aroused and inspired
the audience."
From the SZ München:
"...standing ovation to a nearly full house, 'Bravo' calls, and the stamping
of feet for "Metropolis", but particularly for Harry Kulzer. The composer
and pianist from Munich succeeded to express the silent film in a form that
far exceeds normal entertainment. It would not be overrated to say: Harry
Kulzer interpreted Fritz Lang. Down to the last detail he adapted the choreographed
film work to the piano..."
"...Here is film returned to it's base form: a light show theatre with a music
that the captures the structure and theme. This two hour evening provides
a stirring demonstration how music can be used to display emotions: the flame
of Freders love as he first glanced the labourers daughter Maria and the insane
furore of the inventor Rotwang; all without a single spoken word. Grand. Monumental.
Stirring."
